Davy Crockett Pellet Grill Review

In this review we are going to look at this highly rated pellet grill from Green Mountain Products.
All Green Mountain products are based around ‘grilling with pellets’ they have a line of pellet grills as well as having a product line of their own pellets, sauces, rubs and accessories.

Their range of products is all named after famous American Outdoorsmen so they have a ‘Jim Bowie’ a ‘Daniel Boone’ and the model that we are going to take a look at The Davy Crockett Pellet Grill.

This grill has three great benefits – It’s portable, combines modern day technology with old fashioned good looks and should be affordable enough for most budgets.

So let’s go through some of the pros and cons of the Davy Crockett.

Pros

Easy to Set up -Setting up the actual grill is super easy and shouldn’t take you any longer than 20 minutes even if you aren’t that practical. Wi-Fi set up is also simple as there is plenty of documentation and videos to show you the process.

Compact & Portable – While the Davy Crockett grill can easily be set up in your backyard and put away when not in use, one of its main benefits is its portability. In fact Green Mountain market it as a tailgating pellet grill but it would be fine for home use for a small family or even for those who have a small patio or backyard area. Or just enjoy the best of both worlds and use it at home and pop it into the trunk of your car for any other outdoor adventures.

Affordable & Economic – The grill comes with a variety of power options you can use a regular household electric outlet, you can use your cell phone or car cigarette lighter. It comes with a 12 volt Jumper Cable and a 110 volt converter. If you are into solar power this would be the perfect use.

Modern Day Technology for Great Results – Being able to check and adjust the temperature when you are away from the pellet grill is a great feature. Its on-board computer lets you to set the temperature you need from 150 to 550 degrees. It also comes with a meat probe which you insert through an access hole and into the food the controller tells you the internal temperature of the meat so that you know exactly when it’s ready to eat.

Versatile Cooking – You can slow cook a brisket or pork shoulder for pulled pork, BBQ a chicken or even bake a cake not to forget the all-important ability to searing a steak. There are plenty of video recipes from Green Mountain as well that you can follow along with. The flame can also be set to direct or indirect flame. The grilling surface is big enough to cook for a group of 4-6 people.

Cons

Legs are too short – One of the main negatives reported was that though the legs made good carry handles they were a bit short. It also takes two people to get the legs set up. If the height is an issue a fold up table to place it on might be a good solution.

Customer Reviews

The Reviews we have discovered online have been really positive about the Davy Crockett grill
One reviewer mentioned that he had cooked beer can chicken and sausages on it and it produced a great Smokey flavor to his meat. He also described it as one of the best grill investments he has made.

Another customer praised their customer service and commented that he had previously cooked on Traegers but found Green Mountain grill better.

Not all the reviews were positive one guy said he preferred to use his propane burner as it was quicker to get the grill up to temperature.

Accessories & Pellets

Green Mountain recommends using their own brand food grade hardwood pellets. You certainly shouldn’t use softwood pellets as some of them contain phenols that may cause harmful effects to your body. We noted that many customers who purchased the Davy Crockett purchased pellets from this Wood pellet Company.
Green Mountain also has a cover for the grill and a handy tote bag to make it easy to carry.

Conclusion

The Davy Crockett is a great looking, functional compact and portable Pellet Grill. I’m not going to go into the pros and cons of pellet grilling in this review but I think you will be pleasantly surprised if you have been using an electric or gas grill previously.
It has been favorably compared to Traeger pellet grills and reviewers have commented it as good or better than a Traeger which is high praise enough in our opinion.
The Wi-Fi functionality and computer automation ensures that you can relax with a beer and let the Davy Crockett do its work and produce great tasting well cooked food.
